Patriots Conclude Day 2 of NFL Draft (4/27/03)

With the fourth round pick the New England Patriots got from the Houston Texans, the Patriots selected Temple linebacker/lineman Dan Klecko. The son of former New York Sack Exchange member Joe Klecko, Dan carved out a niche as a hybrid on Temple's defense in 2002, earning Big East Defensive Player of The Year honors. Adding a guy like that to a defensive corps already boasting Richard Seymour, Rodney Harrison, Roosevelt Colvin, etc is definitely a good thing.
                                                             117th overall - Dan Klecko

With the fourth round pick they got from the Denver Broncos, the Patriots selected Central Florida cornerback Asante Samuel. He had 8 total picks at UCF in three years but he also had 233 punt return yards in 2002. Belichick thrives on special teams aces so Samuel could be a good punt returner on games Troy Brown might not play. Who knows, he might be a good corner too.
                                                     120th overall - Asante Samuel

With the pick they got from the Patriots, the Broncos took Clemson defensive end Bryant McNeal 128th overall. The Patriots then traded their 5th round pick, 154th overall to the Tennessee Titans along with their seventh round pick for pick 164 along with the Titans 6th and 7th round picks. The Titans took Ohio State safety Donnie Nickey. With the other pick they got from the Patriots, the Broncos took Ole Miss center Ben Claxton 157th overall. With the pick they got from the Titans, the Patriots took Boston College center Dan Koppen 164th overall. Ironically the man Koppen blocked for, quarterback Brian St. Pierre, was drafted the pick before by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Koppen was an anchor on the offensive line for BC that went 9-4 on the season with a victory over Rutgers in the Motor City Bowl. The Patriots have Mike Compton, Joe Andruzzi and Damien Woody already at guard and center but you never know when injuries will pop up. Having O-Line depth is never a bad thing.
                                                            164th overall - Dan Koppen

With the sixth round pick they got from the Patriots, the Bears traded it to the Jaguars. The Jaguars took all-pro tackle Jonathan Ogden's younger brother Marques out of Howard University. As for the Patriots, 3 years ago they took quarterback Tom Brady with pick 199. This year in the sixth round at pick 201 the Patriots took Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury had one of the best years in college football history, passing for over 5,000 yards with 45 touchdown throws. Texas Tech went 9-5 on the season including a 55-10 rout of Clemson in the Tangerine Bowl. So if he's this good, how did he fall this far? Mike Leach's offense is designed so that pretty much any quarterback can be successful there. The word is he's a system quarterback but he's going to get his chance come camp. After all, he was pick number 201 and pick 199 won Superbowl 36 MVP.
                                                   201st overall - Kliff Kingsbury

With the 7th round pick they got from the Patriots (that they got from Green Bay in the Grant Williams trade) the Titans took Florida State offensive tackle Todd Williams 225th overall. With the seventh round pick they got from the New Orleans Saints, the Patriots selected California linebacker Tully Banta-Cain. This is another head scratcher as he was All Pac-10 his senior year and recorded 26.5 sacks in his time at Cal. Why did he fall this far? Supposedly he's too big to be a linebacker and too small to be a defensive end in the NFL. I'm sure Coach Belichick will have a role for him.
                                                      239th overall - Tully Banta-Cain

With their own seventh round pick, the Patriots selected Baylor defensive tackle Ethan Kelley. Kelley was an interesting prospect as he spent the first two years at Baylor on the offensive line then tried out for defensive tackle his junior year. He made 133 tackles with four sacks in his two years on the defensive side. The fact he didn't spend all four years on the defensive line or make All Big-12 dropped his stock in the draft. We'll see how he does once he makes the jump to the pro game.
                                                   243rd overall - Ethan Kelley

The Patriots took six players on Day 2 and most of them are strictly for depth. However, having a stud like Kingsbury, Big East Defensive player of the year in Klecko and a solid lineman like Koppen might be good value. They may get cut the first week as well, we won't know until training camp. Let's hope for the best.

Patriots Make Big Splash on Day 1 of NFL Draft (4/26/03)

Day 1 of the 2003 NFL Draft is in the books and what a doozy it was. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted 2002 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Carson Palmer first overall but the biggest laugher was the Minnesota Vikings failing to get their pick into the office in time. Because it was late, they dropped from 7th overall down to 9th. Thanks to Minnesota's incompetence, the Jacksonville Jaguars took Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich 7th overall and the Carolina Panthers took Utah offensive tackle Jordan Gross 8th overall. The Vikings ended up choosing Oklahoma State defensive tackle Kevin Williams. That might be who they wanted all along but if Leftwich and Gross turn into HoF players, they're going to have egg on their face forever more. As for the New England Patriots, they made a bold move when they traded the 14th overall pick they got from Buffalo in last year's Drew Bledsoe trade along with their own sixth round pick to the Chicago Bears to move up one slot to pick 13. With the 13th overall pick the Patriots took Texas A&M defensive tackle Ty Warren. Warren clogged up the middle for the Aggies in 2002 earning All-Big 12 honors and it looks like the Patriots want Bobby Hamilton and Richard Seymour at the end slots with Warren in the middle to run a 3-4 defense. With Tedy Bruschi, Roman Phifer, Mike Vrabel, Ted Johnson, Willie McGinest and Rosevelt Colvin as the linebackers, Tyrone Poole and Ty Law the corners and Rodney Harrison and Lawyer Milloy as the safeties, this could be a devastating defense next year.
                                                             13th overall - Ty Warren

With their own first round pick, the Patriots traded it to the Baltimore Ravens for their second round pick this year and a 1st round pick next year. The Ravens ended up selecting California quarterback Kyle Boller with the 19th overall pick. The Ravens were a salary cap casualty in 2002 so Belichick is banking on the Ravens stinking for one more year for another high draft pick. Problem is they took Ed Reed last year and also took Arizona State defensive end Terrell Suggs 10th overall this year. Combined with Ray Lewis, that's going to be a defensive terror this coming season. So what did the Patriots do with the pick they got from the Ravens? They traded it along with their third round pick to the Houston Texans for their second round pick and a fourth. The Houston pick was the fourth of the second round and the Patriots selected hard hitting Illinois cornerback Eugene Wilson. Wilson was a ballhawk his sophomore and junior years, pulling in a combined 10 interceptions. So why did he fall to the second round? He only made 1 pick for Illinois his senior year on a team that went 5-7. Bad team aside, with the Patriots relying on veterans Otis Smith and free agent signing Tyrone Poole, they definitely need depth at defensive back.
                                                             36th overall - Eugene Wilson

The Texans used their pick they got from the Patriots to pick Michigan tight end Bennie Joppru. When Joppru was a freshman, his quarterback was none other than Tom Brady. The Patriots then traded their own second round pick and a fourth rounder to the Carolina Panthers to move up to 45th overall to pick Texas A&M wide receiver Bethel Johnson. Johnson was a speedster for the Aggies catching 40 passes for 718 yards and 8 touchdowns after missing most of his junior year with an injury. The Patriots receiving corps of David Patten, Troy Brown, Deion Branch and David Givens could certainly use a guy with speed like Johnson. Especially on the kick and punt returns. This might be a good pick.
                                                          45th overall - Bethel Johnson

The Patriots ended up trading their third round pick, 78th overall, to the Miami Dolphins for their second round pick next year. The Dolphins ended up taking offensive tackle Wade Smith out of Memphis University. The third round pick they sent to the Texans at 75th overall was used to select Northwest Missouri State offensive tackle Seth Wand. That officially ended the first day of the draft where Belichick wheeled and dealed. All in all they took a nosetackle, a cornerback and a receiver that they desperately needed. The Pats had no true speedsters at receivers and definitely needed a run stuffer like Warren. Replacing Tebucky Jones will definitely be Wilson....if all these guys are good enough that is.

Patriots Trade Tebucky Jones to New Orleans (4/14/03)

The New England Patriots made a shocking trade today when they sent starting safety Tebucky Jones to the New Orleans Saints. Jones was one of the first round picks the Patriots got from the New York Jets in the Bill Parcells compensation trade and was an integral part of their 2001 run to Superbowl 36. Jones had a key interception against the Pittsburgh Steelers and would have been immortalized forever had the Willie McGinest holding penalty not negated his fumble recovery for a touchdown in Superbowl 36.
                                                   Tebucky in Superbowl 36

So why was he traded? The entire defense took a step back in 2002 and was one of the worst rushing defenses in the league. Tom Brady needed two comeback wins against Chicago and Miami along with an overtime kick by Adam Vinatieri against the Kansas City Chiefs not to finish 6-10 last season. Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick is cleaning house out of a lot of players that contributed to that. The Patriots made a splash in free agency signing Rosevelt Colvin from the Bears and Rodney Harrison from the San Diego Chargers. Jones was pretty much expendable with both Lawyer Milloy and Rodney Harrison on the Patriots now.
Jets beat the Patriots to win the AFC East

So what did the Patriots get for Jones? The Saints sent their third and seventh round picks in this upcoming NFL Draft and a fourth round pick next season.  The Patriots as of right now have 13 picks in the upcoming draft including two firsts, a second, two thirds, two fourths. two fifths, a sixth and THREE seventh rounders. If the Patriots are going to rebuild the defense after last season's disaster, now is the time to do it. We got 12 days until the draft, who knows what will happen then.

Patriots Routed By Niners (9/29/24)

The horrible 2024 NFL season continued for the New England Patriots as they dropped their Week 4 matchup to the San Francisco Forty Niners. ...
